Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech) and the Michigan Tech Research Institute (MTRI) are implementing key observing systems and modeling improvements that focus on critical needs of the Great Lakes region that affect the health, ecological integrity and economic viability of the region. Priority issues are climate change impacts, ecosystem and food web dynamics, protection of public health, and navigation safety and efficiency.

Observation data for the Keweenaw Water North Buoy (45023) and the Keweenaw Water South Buoy (45025) are now available at the Upper Great Lakes Observing System (UGLOS) website. These data will no longer be available through the Lake Superior Water Monitoring and Information System (this website). Please check UGLOS for all future updates.

The Lake Superior Water Monitoring and Information System connects scientific discoveries to public awareness of issues facing the Great Lakes resources. The initiative features summer activities and cruises in the Great Lakes, and promotes and showcases Michigan Tech's contributions to Great Lakes research. Students and researchers will have an opportunity to be in a state-of-the-art laboratory developing, fabricating, and testing new aquatic and biota sampling instrumentation for studies and trained in collection of aquatic data, biological and sediment sampling.

Support the Federal Great Lakes Initiative and assist the State of Michigan to emerge as a leader in research and development of its Great Lakes resources.

Provide visibility and outreach for Michigan Tech in the Great Lakes Region, connecting research knowledge to public awareness of issues facing the Great Lakes resources.

Deploy cutting edge technologies and design new instrumentation that will assist supporting the four priority issues outlined by GLOS, these being: climate change impacts; ecosystem and food web dynamics; protection of public health; and navigation safety and efficiency.

Our Facilities

Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech) is located in Houghton, MI. Groundbreaking is scheduled to start this spring of the Keweenaw Waterway waterfront Great Lakes Research Center (GLRC) on campus. The new center will house laboratories and classrooms supporting researchers and students working with Great Lakes biological, chemical and physical studies.
